Is the Hurricane Sundeck 2400 a good boat?
I’ve been looking and looking and looking for a used boat . . . 22-24 feet in length. . . that I could use for waterskiing, cruising, wakeboarding . . . . . ..and something that most definitely has a head. Everyone tells me I should avoid an I/O motor, but that seems to comprise 98% of the market. This boat is the first outboard model that has everything I want, and even looks ok. Problem is . . . I somehow get the feeling that this is the “Kia” of the boating world. I’m not sure why I feel that way. I kind of feel that it’s like a moped. Everyone wants to ride one, but no one wants to be seen on one.
The boating world strikes me as a snobby one and it seems that if you want a 23foot cruiser/ski boat, you really want to be in a Sea Ray or Four Winns or Chaparral or Crownline or Rinker. Where does this boat fit in that spectrum?
Is my opinion completely off base?
I own two Sea Rays with I/O’s and they are extremely reliable. So whoever is telling you to avoid I/O’s has never owned one long term. I owned several boats with I/O’s and six with outboards. I’ll never own another with outboards again. Reason, outboards are EASY to steal off the back of the boat and resold as a whole engine, or for parts. Tracing one is almost impossible. Don’t let other peoples’ opinions sway you from what you want and can afford. Get what feels right to you, that’s all that counts. Below is an article for the Hurricane from a respected boating magazine. Sure Hurricane isn’t one of the BIG name boats, but it’s a boat that you’ll have and your friends don’t have.
BTW, real boaters aren’t snobs. It’s the “wannabes” that are snobs. They think they know everything about boats when they really don’t. Listen to the long term boaters that have owned boats for decades, and have had different kinds. In the 40+ years I’ve had 10 different boats. Currently own three. Also, Kia is making a darn good car these days and they have almost no problems. So by saying it’s like a Kia, is actually saying something good about the boat.
