Boats For Sales

Do I need 2 bill of sales for a boat that comes with a trailer?
I am buying a boat with a trailer. The owner lost the title but will go to get the bill of sale notarized with me. Do I need a bill of for the boat and another one for the trailer or can they both be on the same one?
Most states require a title for the boat and one for the trailer. The trailer is just like a motor vehicle – you need a title, inspection, and tags (registration). That is how it is in Virginia. Some localities impose a personal property tax, and some will even check and ticket parked trailers at boat ramps to generate revenue. The boat requires a title for registration, insurance and to prove ownership. I would never (again) buy a boat or trailer without clear titles to both. In case you haven’t picked up on this, I got burned with a untitled trailer for which I cannot get tags. Check with your local Department of motor vehicles on how to get a trailer title before you buy a boat without one. It is harder than it seems. Boats are titled by Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, not DMV. Boats and trailers without titles are dirt cheap for a reason. Don’t be a sucker.
