Fresh And Salt Water Fishing Vancouver Island
Fishing Vancouver Island, British Columbia, encompasses two different sorts of angling, both fresh and salt water. For now, let’s take a look at the salt water variety and come back to fresh water fishing at a later date.
The seas which surround Vancouver Island are literally teaming with six species of salmon, rockfish, halibut and loads more species of fish which anglers like to catch. There are also a great many unusual and unique species which can be found here and it is a popular island for both boaters and fishermen. Charters are available to take people out or you are able to launch your own boat from one of the many ramps.
A weekend of fishing in British Columbia quite simply can’t be beaten, however if you plan going to outlying areas you may need to stay longer. The CA$ is valued at less than the UD$ and prices are about the same so visitors enjoy a discount on most things. Gas is the only item that is more expensive.
You can fly and bottom fish from boat trips out of Victoria but it is best to avoid peak season times as prices are higher and a lot of people visit this area. Live on-board operators of charter boats will take you out for the day and show you where the best fishing can be found. One of the best places is Port Hardy; this port is the entrance to Queen Charlotte Islands and will see you bagging a catch worth boasting about.
During early and late season cheap packages can be found where visitors can get a couple of day’s fishing, accommodation and flights out of Vancouver for all inclusive prices. These packages are available across the entire price spectrum and fly lodges will include guides and up-scale accommodation, as well as extras.
There are plenty of B&B’s in the Island which offer reasonably priced accommodation and will include in the cost of your stay a day out fishing from the beach and the bank as well as crabbing, shrimping, clamming and musseling.
There is decent camping available as well as motels, cabins and even people who put up a couple of spare rooms in their homes. Bear in mind if you plan on camping that Vancouver Island has a wet and dry season, so in the wet season, camping isn’t a great choice. Budget lodging is simple to find except during the peak of salmon season.
Uclet and Tofino celebrate a salmon festival in the fall and offer inexpensive lodging and wonderful seafood all year round. They can be a little far to travel to from Port Alberni, for a weekend, but if you stay a few extra nights it is worth taking the trouble.
If you don’t get too seasick, you should take a trip off Big Bank, if you do, stick to the waters of Bamfield and Port Alberni. There are fleets of fishing boat charter which can take you out, but boaters must keep a look out of the tide tables. It is much better to make use of the locals, because they are also able to expand your angling knowledge and options. If you are prone to sea-sickness and prefer to stay on your own two feet, there are still plenty of angling options, you can cast streamers or flies for salmon or flatfish and jig herring, perch and rockfish from the piers or protected rocky areas. You might also pull up eel or octopus and these make a marvelous fish stew.

Gulf of Mexico Fishing Help?
I am at my vacation home and on the boat dock, at the bottom there are some fish, not usually in groups but sometimes in couples. They just swim around the dock, and under it. They are about 8-10 inches long I would say but that is just a guess. We have fishing poles and I fish regularily at home but am not familiar with salt water fishing. So how could I catch these? What bait, etc? I really need advice as I don’t know anything about fishing for these. Thanks!
BTW, we are in south western side of Florida about 15 minute ride through the channel at idle speed to get to the open water.
Just impale a shrimp on a hook and your set.Just about all saltwater fish will eat a shrimp. If it,s sheepshead your seeing with stripes on their sides you can even catch them with some of the fiddler crabs crawling the dock.Another thing you can use that works well for me in the artificial spectrum is the Berkley saltwater gulp.I have personally seen it out-fish live bait but it,s a little pricey. If you wan,t to cheat you can buy a cast net but you will have to learn how to throw it and there may be legal issues involved but they are allot of fun to play around with from a dock.Don,t get a big one to start off with though just a 4 or 5 foot radius is enough.Good luck
