How to get numbers for a boat?

I was given a boat by a person that had received the boat previously years ago from an old man that didn’t want it anymore, and I was wondering what needs to be done to get the numbers for the boat. I know you have to have the title and bill of sale to get the numbers, but is there another way to get numbers for the boat if you are given the boat? There is no plate on the boat that has a serial number on it, but there are some old numbers on the side of the boat, but I am unsure as to whether or not all the numbers are still there since it is so old. I just want to get the boat legal before I use it.
Also I live in Louisiana if that is necessary information.

you have to get the hull numbers. where i live to get them you contact the marine police and they’ll send you an application for inspection and once they get it they’ll come out, inspect it, and give you your hull numbers and then you should be able to get the boat numbers with the other proper information
