17 foot boat on Great South Bay?

We are looking to purchase a 17′ Proline Center Console boat to be used on the Great South Bay and my husband is concerned that it will be too small. Any thoughts on the difference between a 17′ and 19′?

I worked for 26 years at FINS on the bay out of Patchogue as a boat captain. Ran everything from 13 to 60 feet including many 17 ft Boston Whalers. You should be fine with a 17ft boat as long as you don’t overload it and don’t go out in poor conditions. The GSB can get rough for a small boat in the right conditions. That being said, if you can get a 19 I would do so. Only because you may find you have outgrown the 17 very quickly. Best of luck and enjoy the bay.
