what defines a yacht from a large boat?

deos it have to have a living quarter? a minimum length? cost a certain amount? can a yacht be a just a large center console? deos a yacht have to have a crew? what makes a yacht a yacht and not just a boat?

Great question . . .

My how times change. . . Now days it has become an “ego” thing, as most anyone will call anything a “yacht” –

But, what really distinguishes a large cabin cruiser, or a large sailing sloop from a yacht?
the answer is pure and absolute “luxury”.

Originally, (and up until the 80′s) a “yacht” was typically defined as “a rich man’s boat; a very luxuriously appointed, privately owned vessel, usually 50 or more feet in length, that is used for recreational and pleasure purposes”. In fact, if you get your hands on an old dictionary or encyclopedia – it will give this definition (or similar) and go on to say that “a yacht is immediately recognized by its luxury as being owned by a very rich man.”

Obviously, the current day use of the word has strayed far from its original “American” usage. I however, simply can’t shed my belief and favoritism for the older and traditional meaning. For example, my previous vessel was a 48′ sloop, my current vessel is a 44′ catamaran. It is a very comfortable vessel. It looks great and it is very “comfortably” equipped – not luxuriously appointed. It has an apartment size head (or bathroom) two refrigerators, a stove, microwave, a 10′ long galley (kitchen) counter top, a 6′ x 8′ walk in closet, and a comfortable master suite large enough for a queen size bed. – but it is very far from being a “yacht” – least wise from the “old” (and my own) definition.

People (including boat owners) today will call almost anything a yacht – the dictionary now says anything over 20′ and most don’t mention anything about luxury.
So, as long as it is not a canoe, kayak, or pontoon boat – I guess you can pick your own definition.

For me, I go with J.P Morgan’s answer to the question by Henry Clay Pierce, when asked how much a “yacht” cost. J.P Morgan’s response: “You have no right to own a yacht if you have to ask that question.”

Now if that doesn’t acurately define the length and luxury of what a yacht really is – I don’t know what else does.

Happy and Safe Boating,
John
